When I first started on this health journey, I tried just changing the way I eat. I tried many different ways over the years, from cutting out sugar and lowering my fats, to being mostly vegetarian, to what I finally found that works best for me, and that’s low carb or Keto.
During my journey to this WOE, I discovered many websites and recipes, but one thing I found that helped me tremendously was books. I know in today’s world you can find just about anything you want online, but when I want recipes or information that l’ll refer back to over and over, I prefer something more physical, something I can actually hold in my hand. A book I can turn the pages of, add post it notes to, or bookmark certain pages I find I use most often.
I am doing all of this to try to help others on their journey to healthy living. I want to make it easier for you than it was for me. One way to do that is to give you this list I have compiled of the top 10 books that I have found to be most helpful. These books are some I own, some I want to own, some I have browsed through, and some I have read front to back numerous times.
But they are all books that I believe can be a huge help when trying to change your WOE. Some are simply cookbooks, some are more informative, and some are a combination of both.
1. Keto: The complete Guide to Success on the Ketogenic Diet, including Simplified Science and No-Cook Meal Plans
by Maria Emmerich
This book is my first recommendation for a couple reasons. First, it is by a well known author that I trust that has been doing this journey for awhile. Secondly, this book gives you some great information in the science behind Keto WOE, among other things. It also offers some great no-cook recipes for a 7-day meal plan. There is so much information in this one book that I would recommend it if you can only get one book right now.
2. Quick & Easy Ketogenic Cooking: Time-Saving Paleo Recipes and Meal Plans to Improve Your Health and Help You Lose Weight
by Maria Emmerich
This book is one that I have in my library. This is actually one of the first recipe books I purchased when started this WOE. I have used it many times and have quite a few of the recipes book marked because they have become family favorites, such as Mushroom Ragu and Sweet n Spicy Short Ribs. There are even some recipes I still haven’t tried yet! But this is definitely one of my go to cook books.
3. The Obesity Code
by Dr. Jason Fung
This book is on my top ten because it explains things in a way I can understand. He reveals the many myths of what causes obesity and what healthy eating really looks like. He is also a well known trusted doctor, which helps this book have even more credibility. This book is a must for accurate information of living a healthy life.
4. Completely Keto
by Harlan Kilstein
This book is in my top 10 because it has many of my often used recipes in it. The author, Harlan Kilstein, is actually where I first got information on the Keto WOE. He has an informative, honest, no nonsense approach to this WOE and I have yet to find a recipe of his I didn’t enjoy. (Unless it was a smoothie with avocados. I do not do avocados in smoothies!) Seriously, you have to try the cheesecake!
5. Keto Made Easy: 100+ Easy Keto Dishes Made Fast to Fit Your Life
by Megha Bardot and Matt Gaedke
This book is on my list because I am a big fan of these two. I first found them online, watching some of their videos. Shortly after, I decided to get this book because, as I said, I prefer a physical object I can hold and flip through. I like that they offer a variety of recipes that are fairly easy to follow. Some of my favorites are the hush puppies and the Best Keto Bread recipe. This is actually the bread recipe I use most often.
6. Lies My Doctor Told Me: Medical Myths That Can Harm Your Health
by Dr. Ken Berry
This book is another great one! It is another super informative book written by a doctor that helps break through all the misinformation and myths we have been taught about what a healthy diet should look like. Dr. Berry explains how doctors are taught versus how they should be taught, he covers the food pyramid and why it should change, information about inflammation, and more. This should maybe be closer to the top of my list, but it is definitely a must read.
7. The Complete Ketogenic Diet for Beginners: Your Essential Guide to Living the Keto Lifestyle
by Amy Ramos
This book sort of covers all the bases. It has recipes that are delicious and easy to follow, a 14 day meal plan, and explains the fundamentals of the Keto WOE. This is another great one if you are just starting out on your healthy living journey. It could easily be a go to for information and recipes for years to come.
8. The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, And Extended Fasting
by Jason Fung MD with Jimmy Moore
This book is on my list because I have found it to be so helpful when I started learning about fasting. I was once a skeptic because it sounded crazy to me to go a day or more without eating. I have since learned about all the many health benefits to fasting and this book gives so much information on that! This book explains why fasting is beneficial, why we don’t need to eat as often as we were taught, and all the different ways to fast.
9. The Art of Healthy Eating-Sweets: Grain Free Low Carb Reinvented
by Maria Emmerich
This book is another great one by Maria Emmerich. This book is great for people looking for some amazing, healthy desserts and baked goods. Since the author has some experience in this WOE, her dessert recipes are some of my favorites.
10. Fat for Fuel: A Revolutionary Diet to Combat Cancer, Boost Brain Power, and Increase Your Energy
by Joseph Mercola
This is the final book in my top ten list, but I had to be sure to include it because it is so informative! This book explains why low carb and high fat eating is so beneficial for your health. He talks about cancer and other diseases and explains how we can help take control of our health through what we eat. He explains how this WOE can affect your health, your brain, your energy, and so much more!
These books can all be found on Amazon. Some of them may be available through the individual author’s website as well. They really aren’t in any particular order, but they are all so helpful when making this journey. You don’t have to stumble and try to figure out everything on your own. Use all the resources at your disposal to help make this an easier, painless transition.
Want to see all 50 books that I consider “must haves” for anyone wanting live a low carb life?
I consider myself a sort of book connoisseur…I believe a good reference library is essential for sparking new meal plans, recipes and to help create healthy habits to help us all live a longer healthier life.
However, when I sat down to create this list, I actually came up with 50 books in total that I feel we should all have on our bookshelves or in our kitchens. I’ve made pdf that outlines all 50 of these books, a little description on why I think it’s a must have and where you can get your own copy.
I made sure to include more than just cookbooks, you need more than recipes to live a healthy life. So you’ll find books that will help you eat better, live better, create healthy habits, and a lot more.
